How to obtain a DGNB certification with Rockpanel products

The DGNB (DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen – German Sustainable Building Council) – is one of the most balanced sustainability schemes out there. Their conceptual principles revolve around a holistic understanding of sustainability, and it therefore looks at both environmental, economic and sociocultural factors. For the DGNB certification scheme, sustainability is just as much about the environment as it is about economic viability and people. Quality and future viability are therefore key factors in sustainability for the DGNB.

DGNB: a holistic view at sustainability

The DGNB places focus on health, stability of value, responsible management of resources and a holistic view of lifecycle management. The German non-profit organisation – which was founded in 2007 and operates internationally – places equal focus on all aspects of sustainability. The positive impact of a construction needs to be improved across all parameters to improve the rating in the DGNB system.

The DGNB not only offers a certification system for new-build, but also has a system specifically for building in use. It also gives out "Climate Positive" awards to buildings that are demonstrably carbon-neutral based on their real consumption data.

The DGNB system is based on the three central sustainability areas they identified: ecology, economy and sociocultural issues. These three aspects are weighted equally in the assessment.

Parameters in the DGNB system

But what are the parameters DGBN looks at? Their system is based on the three central sustainability areas they identified: ecology, economy and sociocultural issues. These three aspects are weighted equally in the assessment. The DGNB system evaluates the location as well as the technical and procedural quality with a holistic approach. The certification criteria are set based on the type of use of the building, in order to have a tailored approach for different categories of buildings.

The DGNB system looks at all phases a building goes through, including:

  • Planning
  • Construction
  • Operation
  • Inventory, Conversion and Renovation
  • End of Life/Recycling

Four different DGNB awards

You can obtain a DGNB certificate on four different levels. Platinum is the highest possible level and is followed by Gold, Silver and Bronze. This latter award only applies to certification of existing buildings (Building in Use certificate).
