A brand-new community centre shines in the Ketelstraat in Mesen (Belgium). The 'jewel box' is a regeneration project for the local community providing a new multifunctional meeting place for both young people and older residents. The facade is clad with Rockpanel in a striking golden colour, with playful lines and irregular shapes.
The town Mesen launched a competition to build a new community centre. With such subsidised projects, the size is determined based on the number of social housing units in the municipality. Therefore, the area of this project was set at a maximum of 100 square metres. "I therefore interpreted the design as a 10m² by 10m² building, consisting of a multi-purpose room, the necessary sanitary facilities, a kitchen, storage and technical rooms," explains architect Stefan Feliers of ARC.
